GIS + Enterprise Software: Geospatial Information Improves Processes and Increases Operational Efficiencies
Utility companies are increasingly using geographic information systems (GIS) capabilities and extensions in their enterprise software applications. GIS enables land-based display, mapping, and schematic views of electricity, gas, water, and district heating distribution, and wastewater collection networks. Utilities have found that geospatial information and analytics improves processes and increases operational efficiencies. GIS-enabled applications provide all users in an organization, especially network engineers and field workers, access to data and information that can help them to improve their work.
Vendors that have added GIS capabilities to their products include Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Esri, GE, Intergraph, and Schneider Electric.
A recent report by IDC on GIS software and vendors found that:
- Vendors increasingly provide functions to assign and access geospatial data
- GIS data management platforms are increasingly open, flexible, and easily integratable
- 3D capabilities for design, modeling, visualization and analysis is becoming increasingly common
- GIS-enabled asset and design and modeling systems provide both 2D and 3D asset modeling, enabling management of complex data sets like for building information modeling (BIM)
François Segalotto, Senior Research Analyst at IDC, said that “GIS solutions are now becoming core to the utilities’ enterprise IT strategies as companies leverage geographic information for business execution rather than just asset management. Vendors are supporting this shift and have grown their GIS offerings to address a broad range of utility business needs, from distribution and mobile workforce management to enterprise resource planning. With full asset management and business process support at the core, key ingredients of modern utility GIS feature open data management technology, packaged integration with enterprise systems and business applications, and advanced analytics and visualization functionality leveraging cloud and Web services and mobile apps.”
