High Performance Computing: Applying Supercomputing to the World’s Most Difficult Problems
High Performance Computing (HPC) is the term applied to computers that are the fastest and most-cutting edge in their abilities to parse and solve very complex problems. As computing machines become ever more sophisticated and capable, the bar continually rises on what is considered a supercomputer.
HPC-level machines are frequently applied to difficult scientific problems like weather prediction and simulation, genomic analysis, but also for things like analyzing complex multi-parameter financial models, and for modeling and developing new innovative products. Supercomputers can often give businesses an edge over their competitors when making important business decisions.
A report by Markets and Markets estimated the HPC market to be $24.32 billion i n2013 and will grow to $33.43 billion by 2018.
Earl Joseph, program vice president for technical computing at IDC, said that “HPC servers have been closely linked—not only to scientific advances, but also to industrial innovation and economic competitiveness. For this reason, nations and regions across the world, as well as businesses and universities of all sizes, are increasing their investments in high performance computing.”
National Defense agencies are also increasingly applying HPC to military and national security problems. The global defense HPC market is expected to reach $13.6 billion in 2020.
Eric D. Isaacs, Director of Argonne National Laboratory, said that “the United States cannot afford to take a back seat in computer technology to the Chinese, or to anyone else. The nation that leads the world in high-performance computing will have an enormous competitive advantage in every sector, including national defense…”
