High Performance Computing (HPC): IDC Reports Stunning ROI for Technology
The High-Performance Computing (HPC) server market finished up 2015 by 12 percent, reaching $11.4 billion, according to a report from IDC sponsored by the DOE. When HPC storage, middleware, applications, and services are also considered, the total market size for 2015 comes out to $21 billion.
One stunning number from the report is that IDC estimates that for every dollar spent on HPC technology the ROI is $514.70!
Other key facts from the IDC report include:
- Both strategic and economic reasons cause vendors to push for ever-faster computers. 100 PetaFlop systems will become more common in 2016
- HPC is increasingly being done in the cloud
- A major challenge of HPC is software. Few software libraries and applications are written to run in HPC environments
- The Chinese are expected to play a bigger role in the HPC market, likely extending into Europe, particularly by Lenovo
The report identified the following verticals for practical applications within HPC:
- Fraud and anomaly detection
- Marketing
- Business intelligence
- Large IT Infrastructures, like what is required Internet-of-Things
