Hybrid Cloud Computing: Private Clouds to Mutate into Hybrid Ones?
Hybrid cloud computing is a combination of infrastructure and services built from combinations of public cloud-computing, a private cloud computing and an on-premises network.
Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research, when summarizing the findings of a study said that, “the best way that vendors can serve customers over the next 3 to 5 years is by delivering true hybrid solutions that seamlessly integrate deployment, policy management, enforcement mechanisms, and reporting across on-premise and hosted solutions. And also by helping customers get more out of their existing solutions… Businesses are hoping hybrid SaaS (security-as-a-service)/on-premise solutions will be the magic bullet that kills the security efficacy and complexity problem.”
ECM-vendor Alfresco, agrees with that vision and is one of very few software vendors that offer a true hybrid cloud solution. David Gildeh, Director of Cloud Services at Alfresco, said that “at Alfresco, we believe hybrid is the only way the enterprise today can address all their ECM needs. We’ve called cloud-only vendors bluff that everything can be managed in the cloud. We’ve also addressed the gaps of legacy on-premise only vendors who can’t meet the increasing needs for enterprises to securely share content outside their firewall with third parties or mobile devices.”
Thomas Bittman, analyst at Gartner, said that “so what does all this mean now? It means look out – the world is not going to be neatly divided into separate private and public cloud services. To maximize efficiency and take advantage of publicly available cloud services, we’re going to munge them together. Private clouds, in particular, will not stay simply ‘private’ for long – Gartner expects most private cloud services to become hybrid.”
