Industrial Artificial Intelligence: Algorithms will Power Smart Manufacturing

Manufacturing are deploying “smart manufacturing” technologies to manage their operations.  Key to many of these technologies are embedded Artificial Intelligence software. Automation based on Industrial Artificial Intelligence is being applied across all steps of the product life cycle, from design and production planning to production and distribution.

Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE, said that “Industrial companies need to become digital to survive. We must turn information into insights and insights into outcomes.”

Intel’s Blue Horizon estimates that a smart factory will generate about 1,000,000GB of data every day. That’s data that when processed can be used by algorithms and AI to make smart decisions about how the factory should operate.

Mariya Yao reported in Forbes how Harel Kodesh, CTO of GE Digital, describes Industrial AI: “Industrial AI is built as an end-to-end system as a round-trip ticket, where data is generated by sensors on the edge, served to algorithms, modeled on the cloud, and then moved back to the edge for implementation. Between the edge and the cloud are supervisor gateways and multiple nodes of computer storage since the entire system must be able to run the the right load at the right places.”
