Industry Cloud Computing: Vertical Cloud Solutions that Go Beyond Just IT Services
An Industry cloud platform is a cloud platform that includes software and infrastructure that is configured and tuned to target the needs of a specific vertical industry.
Gregor Petri, VP Analyst at Gartner, said that “in effect, industry cloud platforms turn a cloud platform into a business platform, enabling an existing technological innovation tool to also serve as a business innovation tool. They do so — not as predefined, one-off, vertical SaaS solutions — but rather as modular, composable platforms supported by a catalog of industry-specific packaged business capabilities.”
A big advantage of a vertical cloud solution is that business, financial, and compliance issues all specific to the industry are already addressed as part of the solution. Industry Clouds go well past just managing IT data centers, they now also have on-staff experts in the industry.
The major cloud vendors are all targeting specific industries. This includes Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and IBM. For example, in the area of financial services:
- AWS and Goldman Sachs have created data management and analytics solutions that target the financial industry.
- IBM offers a Cloud for Financial Services
- Microsoft offers the Microsoft Cloud for Financial Services
David Linthicum, Chief Cloud Strategy Officer at Deloitte, wrote for InfoWorld that “when it comes to industry-specific services, we usually reinvent the wheel each time we build a new application. With cloud services available on demand that fit within the many vertically-oriented applications that companies build, companies can move faster and relegate the headaches of ever-changing and complex industry-specific services to someone else’s problem domain.”
