Innovation: The High Performance Workplace
For some time Gartner has hosted a blog called the High Performance Workplace. Gartner has a vision of the worker of the future: workers who are highly collaborative, creative and innovative. Using todays’ buzz-word terminology, maybe ‘Worker 2.0’ is the term. The idea is that next-generation technologies and business processes are driving enormous efficiencies and productivity, and that employees of high-performance-workplace companies can return significant value back to their employers.
Worker productivity in the US continues to grow, but what can sustain the growth? Gartner sees changes within IT as an enabler for the vision of the High Performance Workplace. Until recently IT has been in a role that involved primarily cost-cutting and creating efficiencies from automating processes. To continue to provide value, IT needs to provide new avenues that go beyond just automation, and one way is to focus on improving worker productivity. Investment in the workers and their technology tools can become a competitive advantage. In the High Performance Workplace, technology goes towards improving worker efficiencies rather than replacing workers with machines.
New technologies like Web 2.0, on-line communities and collaborative tools will gradually decentralize the process of innovation within the enterprise towards individual workers and ultimately enhance business growth. Gartner forecasts that by 2017 80% of the tasks that workers perform will be non-routine, non-manual and collaborative. Simultaneous to decentralization within the enterprise, Gartner also sees enterprises having increasingly more collaborative interactions happening with suppliers, partners and customers.
