Internet of Things: Data Centers and Supply Chain to see Impact of Rapid Growth
In 2009 Gartner estimates that roughly .9 billion devices were connected to the Internet — the Internet of Things. By 2020, they estimate that the number of devices will increase to 26 billion. By 2020, IoT product and service providers will be generating incremental revenues of more than $300 billion from the technology.
Two areas to be particularly affected by this rapid 30-fold growth in connected devices are data centers and supply chain management.
Michael Burkett, Gartner managing vice president, said that “supply chain leaders must design their processes to operate in this digital business world. This includes fulfilling the new expectations of customers and the volatile demands that digital marketing will create. A future supply chain will meet those expectations by converging people, business and things in a digital value network, and incorporating fast-emerging capabilities such as IoT and smart machines into this design strategy.”
Fabrizio Biscotti, research director at Gartner, said that “IoT deployments will generate large quantities of data that need to be processed and analyzed in real time. Processing large quantities of IoT data in real time will increase as a proportion of workloads of data centers, leaving providers facing new security, capacity and analytics challenges.”
