Internet of Things (IoT): Huge Increases in Data Center Capacity Required to Support Expected Surge in Data and Bandwidth
The introduction of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to today’s data centers will likely overwhelm existing capacity. As IoT grows the number of IoT connected things will be well in the billions. International Data Corporation (IDC) is predicting that IoT workloads will demand an increase in data center capacities of nearly 750% over the next five years.
Rick Villars, vice president of datacentre and cloud at IDC, said that “equal, or even greater, investments in the IoT platform services residing in the datacenter will be instrumental in delivering the IoT promise of anytime, anywhere, anyhow connectivity and context. Given the number of devices connected and the amount of data generated, businesses must focus on their IoT service platform requirements at the level of the datacenter itself, not just the individual servers or storage devices.”
The IDC report found that:
- IoT technologies will drive rollouts and new technologies for computations and storage at the computing edge
- IoT data collection will drive growth of data centers and increase the demand for analytics
- IoT data will drive bandwidth requirements and put stress on enterprise and service provider networks
- As volumes at data centers grow, there will be a need for ‘Smart IT’ technologies to better monitor and manage data center assets and stored data
