Internet of Things (IoT): IoT to Shift to Distributed Architectures and Processing of Real-Time Data Streams
Adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to grow by 50 percent in 2016, according to Gartner. 43 percent of organizations will be using some amount of IoT technology by the end of this year. Ultimately, two-thirds of organizations say that they plan to ultimately implement IoT.
As IoT systems and platforms evolve, Gartner sees two features that will become more prevalent: distributed architectures and processing of real-time data streams.
Nik Rouda, research analyst at ESG, said that “I think a lot of data can be understood locally. Edge analytics means you don’t need to bring everything to the data center and save it forever. Maybe we can interpret it, respond to it, record it, or summarize it, and then share it with other locations.”
Gartner suggests that traditional data processing flows need to be re-architected. “With the highly distributed architectures required for most IoT solutions (many things, many places where data is generated, many platforms on which data is processed, and many consumption points to which data must be delivered), the historical approach to centralized collection of data is under pressure. Organizations must support a more distributed data architecture, because IoT solutions are inherently distributed.”
The need for processing of real-time data streams will become increasingly possible with IoT tools. Neha Narkhede, co-founder of Confluent, said that “when you look at IoT and the data coming from devices, it’s a natural stream, and it’s a new area that people understand has a continuous stream of data that devices are going to manage… A lot of the data at rest will also move to data in motion as this technology matures.”
