Internet of Things: Manufacturers to use IoT to Power Digital Twins for Simulation of Remote Devices and Objects
The growing use of the Internet of Things is spurring development of a related technology, “Digital Twins.” A digital twin a a digital or computer model of some real object. Industrial digital twins will be animated by thereal-time incoming data from IoT sensors in the field. It will let engineers study machines and products visually on a computer monitor without actually seeing the real object. When 5G becomes available, the availability of this capability is expected to explode.
Digital twins can be used to monitor anything, like trucks and ships, buildings, and factories. Digital Twins allow manufacturers to simulate and understand the wear and tear of devices in the field and potentially identify flaws quicker and be able to respond to problems in the field more quickly.
A Gartner survey found that digital twin projects are expected to triple in number by 2022 and at least half of the largest manufacturers will be using digital twins for products and assets by that time.
Gartner commented that “by 2020, we estimate there will be more than 20 billion connected sensors and endpoints, and digital twins will exist for potentially billions of things.”
