Internet Trends 2016: Speech and Images to Challenge Use of Text in Search

By Dick Weisinger

Last month, Mary Meeker, partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, presented her annual state of the internet research.

While the results were interesting, there was nothing really unexpected in her results.  Here are some of her findings.

  • Internet growth is slowing.  Growth in developed countries has saturated and increasing only slowly in less developed countries.
  • Search initiated via speech and images will account for half of all searches within five years
  • Mobile hardware sales like iPhone will continue to be stagnant and decline, while voice-centric hardware and software like Amazon Echo will boom
  • Messaging apps are positioned to become the ‘home page’ of mobile devices.
  • Google + Facebook account for three quarters of all internet advertising revenues
