The Data Strategy Dilemma: Companies Struggle with Effective Data Management

By Dick Weisinger

Recent findings have shed light on a concerning trend in corporate data management: a significant number of organizations lack a comprehensive data strategy. This revelation raises questions about how companies are approaching their data assets and the potential implications for their business operations and decision-making processes.

According to the third Carruthers and Jackson Data Maturity Index survey conducted in November 2024, 26% of organizations, primarily in the UK and US, operate without a formal data strategy. This is a significant proportion, indicating that over a quarter of surveyed companies lack a structured approach to managing their data assets.

The survey also reveals that 39% of organizations have little or nothing in the way of data governance frameworks. This suggests that many companies have implemented data management solutions without a comprehensive strategy or governance structure in place.

Interestingly, despite these gaps in data strategy and governance, organizations are increasing their engagement with artificial intelligence (AI). The survey found that the share of organizations not using AI has dropped dramatically from 26% in 2023 to just 7% in 2024.

This situation creates what the researchers call an “AI Paradox.” While AI usage has surged, 57% of organizations admit that most of their employees still lack data literacy. This disconnect between AI adoption and data literacy poses significant challenges for effective data utilization and decision-making.

On a positive note, the survey indicates an evolution in data governance approaches. There’s a shift from ‘one-size-fits-all’ frameworks to more tailored, department-specific governance models. The adoption of multiple governance frameworks has increased from 31% in 2023 to 37% in 2024, suggesting a more nuanced approach to data management.

The absence of a data strategy can lead to several challenges. Companies without a clear data plan may struggle with “data quality concerns, and the lack of data governance.” This can result in inconsistent data, duplicate records, and incomplete information, all of which can severely impact decision-making and operational efficiency.

Furthermore, the lack of a strategy often leads to missed opportunities. Without effective data governance, organizations may fail to recognize and leverage the full potential of their data. Valuable insights and opportunities for innovation may go unnoticed, hindering growth and competitive advantage.

To address these issues, companies are increasingly recognizing the need for a more holistic approach to data management. This includes developing clear data governance frameworks, implementing data quality measures, and aligning data strategies with overall business objectives.
