Low Code: Two-Thirds of Enterprise App Development Will be Low Code by 2024

By Dick Weisinger

Low-code and no-code development environments enable citizen developers to configure and customize applications without the need to write any code. Often the interface is a drag and drop GUI that allows components to be connected to create the final application.

Paulo Rosado, CEO of OutSystems, said that “fundamentally every organization is becoming a software developer. You need to develop your own software because that’s the only way you can differentiate yourself. With this turmoil of technology, these platforms give some insulation that ensures you are building software for the future and the amount of technical debt you create is much, much smaller.”

Three benefits of using low code include:

  • Encourages rapid application prototyping
  • Does not require developer-level skills
  • Results can be speedily produced

Globally, the low-code tool environment is expected to grow into a $187 billion annually, as forecast by ResearchAndMarkets. By 2024, Gartner predicts that two-thirds of enterprise application development will be done using low code.
