Mobile: More than a Billion Smartphones Now in Use
In 2012, Gartner expects that 821 million smart devices will be sold and that in 2013 more than 1.2 billion will be sold. In 2012, 34 percent of smartphones sold in the US and Europe were Android, and Gartner expects that the Android share of the market to grow to 56 percent by 2016.
Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, said that “For most businesses, smartphones and tablets will not entirely replace PCs, but the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of tablets are changing the way businesses look at their device strategies and the way consumers embrace devices… In 2016, two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, and 40 percent of the workforce will be mobile.”
Neil Mawston, executive director of Strategy Analytics’ Global Wireless Practice, said that “It has taken 16 years for the smartphone industry to reach this historic milestone [of more than one billion smartphones in use]… Most of the world does not yet own a smartphone and there remains huge scope for future growth, particularly in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa. The first billion smartphones in use worldwide took 16 years to reach, but we forecast the next billion to be achieved in less than three years, by 2015.”
