Open Source: Governments Enlist in a Big Way
Fifty-five percent of US government agencies are involved in Open Source implementations, according to a survey of 218 top IT decision makers across various US government agencies. And among these implementations more than 97 percent are very positive about the results.
71 percent of government agencies believe that the use of Open Source can help their IT operations. And among those within the Intelligence agencies, as many as 88 percent believe that Open Source is the right way to go.
The agencies included in the survey are the Department of Defense, Intelligence Agencies, and Federal civilian.
Those agencies that have implemented Open Source cited the following benefits:
- Data Center Consolidation (17 percent)
- Cross-system and Cross-agency application sharing (12 percent)
- Cost Savings (9 percent)
These are big numbers and clearly show that the grasp of Open Source is only getting stronger. Drilling down into the numbers though, it’s also clear that most of the Open Source being used is still on the back-end. There’s been very little traction on desktop with Open Source. Applications in the Data Centers have been shown to both increase efficiencies and to slash costs.
