Market share is typically measured market share in terms of new license revenue and sometimes includes revenues from updates, subscriptions, hosting, technical support and maintenance. In the rankings, where does that leave Open Source database products like MySQL? Nowhere.
Gartner and IDC reports show the top five vendors to be Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Teradata and Sybase. But the ranking is deceptive. With the wave of Open Source product popularity, free downloads of MySQL are powering OS products like SugarCRM, Alfresco, and Joomla. But these deployments go uncounted because MySQL sees no revenues from many of those users.
An Evan Datas survey finds that 40 percent of enterprise developers have used or are deploying the MySQL database. MySQL is a standard component of the LAMP OS environment Linux, Apache Web Server, MySQL, and PHP.
In February, Open Source Ingress announced a product that theyre calling IceBreaker. Ingress was spun off as an Open Source company from CA in 2005. IceBreaker creates an integrated Stack that includes the Linux and the Ingress enterprise database components. An install of IceBreaker installs both the OS and database in a single step. The integrated stack shrinks the task of maintenance costs over the lifetime of the system. Ingress is calling IceBreaker a soft appliance that can be installed on any hardware. Ingress plans to build more specialized appliances built on top of the IceBreaker platform, addressing verticals like email and reporting.
These Open Source RDBMS products are squeezing the traditional software vendors. It is no wonder that both Microsoft and Oracle are pursuing the revenue streams of higher-end applications as the RDBMS becomes more of a commodity item.
