Open Source Software: Usage has Become Pervasive Among Developers
Developers know and use Open Source. 84 percent of them are using it. Developers use Open Source for performance, reliability and cost. Compared to proprietary software open source software has grown a reputation for being easier to get started with and with far fewer issues that come along with acquiring new software.
Jeffrey Hammond, analyst at Forrester, said that “open source used to be popular because of the lower cost. Now the cost of tools is the least important element for developers… Open source is taking over. This is a golden age for developers.” Hammond presented findings from a survey on Open Source software taken jointly by Black Duck Software, Forrester and North Bridge Partners.
The three industries expected to be most impacted by Open Source technologies are:
- Education
- Government
- Health Care
Increasingly Open Source data is not only competing against dominant proprietary software, but it is being used as the primary vehicle for developing and defining new software markets, like for big data and NoSQL. Steven Vaughan-Nichols commented in an article on ZDNet that “Proprietary software doesn’t really stand a chance in these new fields.”
