Oracle Teams Up With Microsoft: On the Road to Multi-Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

Microsoft and Oracle are no longer enemies. Much of that has to do with the change in leadership at Microsoft from Steve Ballmer to Satya Nadella. The earlier days of Microsoft were aggressive when it marked its competitors as ‘enemies’. A 1998 internal Microsoft document said that “Our enemies are the vendors of platforms that compete with ours: Netscape, Sun, IBM, Oracle… The field of battle is the software industry… Total victory is the universal adoption of our standards by developers.”

Last week Microsoft and Oracle announced a strategic partnership for the two companies that enables interoperability of their cloud services: Microsoft Azure + Oracle Cloud. Making it easier for customers to achieve multi-cloud interoperability is the driver behind the announcement.

Dave McCarthy, research vice president at IDC, said that “the new service allows enterprises to move applications that are built on Microsoft and Oracle technologies to the cloud with little to no changes by replicating the same technologies they are using on-premises.”

Clay Magouyrk, EVP of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said that “there’s a well-known myth that you can’t run real applications across two clouds. There is no need for deep skills on both of our platforms or complex configurations — anyone can use the Azure Portal to get the power of our two clouds together.”

Corey Sanders, corporate vice president at Microsoft, said that “the ability to benefit from both clouds, and the flexibility, is a real win for customers.”

Donald Feinberg, vice president at Gartner, said that “Oracle and Microsoft are absolutely unique in the way they are integrating now. I think we will start to see other cloud vendors do the same thing.”
