Predictive Engineering Technology: Turning Product Designs into Photo-Realistic Images and Video

By Dick Weisinger

Ever-improving technology to support fast computations and visualizations is having an impact on the engineering design process.  Simulation, Finite Elements, Analytics, Intelligent Reporting, Team Collaboration and other software-based technologies are increasingly being used to improve product engineering.

The integration of these software technologies with the engineering process is being called Predictive Engineering Technology. Predictive product modeling allows engineers to immediately test out their designs in a simulated environment and help them identify problems or see ways in which the design can be iteratively and quickly improved and refined. New technology allows engineers to create photo-realistic images and video of designed products before they are built.

Jean-Claude Ercolanelli, senior VP of Product Management at Siemens PLM Software, said that “engineers are also increasingly called upon to communicate their results across their organizations, to people who have little direct exposure to interpreting simulation results. Such functionality … facilitates this communication using  simulation models that not only behave like their real-world counterparts, but also present a precise visual representation, promoting understanding and inspiring confidence.”
