Process Mining: Discovering Hidden Workflows

By Dick Weisinger

Process Mining combines business process management with algorithms that mine the data and event logs collected from those processes. That information can help provide insights into those processes and is useful for improving process performance, quality, and compliance.

Process mining reports show the flow of and metrics related to process work tasks. It is possible to see which users are involve din processes, the time needed to perform the tasks and collects statistics related to the task. Key performance indicators for the different tasks are derived from which companies can identify areas for improvement.

Alexander Rinke, cofounder of Celonis, said that “process mining is an easy idea. But it is hard to make it work right for organizations. You need to collect large amounts of data from all sorts of IT systems. You also need to go beyond integrations and must understand the databases that are underneath. And all are customized.”

The Process Mining market is growing more than 50 percent annually and is expected to increase by more than a factor of 10 in the next five years.

Antti Karjalainen, CEO of Robocorp, said that “as companies progress in their automation journey, data-driven technologies become an important part of identifying opportunities. People might not even realize how their own work is related to work done in other areas of the company and process discovery technologies can uncover these hidden workflows.”
