Programming Languages: Python Begins to Edge Out Java in Popularity

Python has been gaining on Java in terms of popularity, and by some measures, has surpassed it. A report by JetBrains found that Java remains the most widespread primary computing language, Python has become the most used language The report found that 93 percent of developers use Python. Python is now the most studied and it also is one of the top three languages targeted as the language to migrate existing code from.

Why Python?

  • Python code ranks high on readability and maintainability
  • Python code is free and so are many or most of the popular Python libraries
  • Python also has a big following, so if you get stuck, it’s easy to look for help.
  • Python has become the most favored language to use for Machine Learning projects.

Why Java?

  • Java’s original 1995 claim to fame was its platform independence: write once, run everywhere.
  • Java is the language for Android apps, Enterprise and the back-end engine for web applications.
  • Java provides many tools and it is a favorite of scientific programming.
