Records Management: High Interest, Low Adoption
Regulations around compliance have many companies scurrying to adopt a records management policy. The interest is high, but many companies still have no records management program in place.
Coincident with Iron Mountain’s purchase of records management company RMS Services-USA, Iron Mountain released the results of a survey of 2000 general councels, CIOs and records management professionals that tried to gauge the extent to which RM has been adopted.
The results of the survey showed:
– High interest in RM. 61% said they are seeking to improve their RM policies and systems.
– Low implementation. While 81% have some sort of document retention schedule in place, 65% said that they do not have an enterprise RM program.
– 71% said their companies lack a group with responsibility for central oversight of records
– Only 38% of companies have a program in place for the consistent destruction of confidential information. State and federal laws mandate the secure destruction of all documents that contain personal information.
Electronic records management is a fast growing segment of ECM as companies grapple with trying to efficiently and cost-effectively address compliance requirements.
