Robots as a Service (RaaS): Enabling Robotics for Businesses of all Sizes

By Dick Weisinger

Robots as a Service (RaaS) is a cloud-based service that leases robotic services, and combines robotics with AI and cloud computing.

Robotic cloud services will provide the centralized control and connection of robots that may be working in different warehouses, factories or retail locations. For humans, it provides a dashboard for monitoring and controlling a robotic landscape. Centralized collection a large amounts of robotic data will also allow AI and machine learning algorithms to improve robotic operations.

Another aspect of RaaS is the optional leasing of robots to businesses. This makes robots available to smaller businesses without making large capital expenditures.

Chris Roberts, associate director at Cambridge Consultants, told IDGConnect that “when using robotics to replace people, a five-year payback time can be typical, rising to ten years for some industries. This is because robots are expensive and the people they’re replacing are often not highly paid. Using RaaS to avoid the massive initial investment is clearly attractive.”

Itay Reiner, head of product management for robotic automation company NICE Advanced Process Automation, said that “these organizations will gain more value from investing in RaaS as it enables them to focus on the development of the actual robotic process automation without having to deal with technical back-end issues.”
