SaaS: Should you Use SaaS with Enterprise Search?

By Dick Weisinger

Today SaaS-based Enterprise Search doesn’t really make sense mainly because there are no real SaaS Enterprise Search options available.  Endeca’s Paul Sonderegger said that “The SaaS approach has had little impact on the enterprise search market to date.”

Blossom, Northern Light and Pico are vendors that have tried to offer SaaS Enterprise Search, but haven’t had success.  On the other hand, the big-brand search vendors have stuck with traditional on-premise licensing.  They may be doing that partly to protect their margins, but also they have a problem on their hands that their products weren’t designed with SaaS as a consideration.

But the biggest blocker to SaaS Search is that most documents are spread across the enterprise in various repositories, and trying to find and pull together that data on a remote server for indexing and referencing is a near insurmountable problem.  Security concerns about data being moved outside the company are also are top on the minds of potential customers.

Given the current situation, it might be some time before a true Enterprise version of search will be available on SaaS.
