Scanning: 2010 Data Capture Trends
AIIM recently highlighted trends in data capture. It is a great free report. Here are a few of those highlights:
Today only 38 percent of paper-originated documents are being scan captured.
Most organizations have or are in the process of adopting a policy for capturing scanned image data, yet nearly a third of those same organizations say that the volume of paper and photocopies that they process is increasing. Interestingly, 25 percent of scanned documents are photocopied at least once before scanning, only 31 percent of documents are destroyed after scanning, and 32 percent of paper documents are being archived.
There are good reasons for adopting a scan-capture system. For example, 46 percent of organizations that implement document capture solutions find that they are seeing positive ROI within 12 months. And within 18 months, nearly two-thirds of organizations are seeing a return on their investments.
Beyond cost savings, other incentives for setting up a scan capture solution include compliance, business process automation, and better knowledge management because of better searchability.
Because of the importance of document searchability, more companies are turning towards automated text recognition techniques such as ICR and OCR.
30 percent of organizations don’t want to deal with the overhead of in-house data capture and have outsourced their solutions. Yet 48 percent have centralized in-house scanning resources and find that this provides closer integration with their business processes.
