Security and Encryption: Momentum for Data Encryption in the Cloud Grows
The number of companies using encryption to secure their data in the cloud has taken a big leap. 41 percent of businesses say that they are extensively encrypting their data, up from just 16 percent of businesses in 2005, according to a a recent study by the Ponemon Institute sponsored by Thales e-Security.
With headlines like the Apple-FBI dispute over iPhone data, encryption is top of mind for many, and is likely to cause others to up their security and encryption efforts. The Ponemon report found that half of organizations say that the information that they store in the cloud is considered sensitive or confidential, a fact that should motivate many more companies to adopt encryption for the data that they store.
Vendors in the encryption space are definitely seeing a pickup in interest. A study by ResearchAndMarkets found that data base encryption, for example, is growing annually at a nearly 30 percent rate. The report found that part of the motivation to adopt encryption is because companies worry about being able to comply with regulatory mandates and their desire to use the and protect data in the cloud.
451 Research concludes that “encrypting sensitive data stored at cloud providers has emerged in recent years as a top consideration for addressing cloud security concerns… Over the coming years, all cloud providers housing sensitive enterprise data will have to offer encryption services to be considered viable options.”
