Security: Businesses Invest in Security Protection Products

Specialized Threat Analysis and Protection (STAP) is a term used by research firm IDC to designate security threats made by malware against financial and intellectual property theft.  The STAP market is growing at a compound annual rate of 42.2 percent through the year 2017.  By 2017, the market should reach $1.17 billion.

Ruggero Contu, Research Director at Gartner, commented that “consistent increase in the complexity and volume of targeted attacks, coupled with compliance-related issues continue to support security market growth.”

Andy Steingruebl, Director at PayPal mobile security, said that “Big data and advanced targeted attacks would be the main forces shaping the security technology market. Advanced attackers are now capable of spying inside an organisation once they successfully breach security controls.”

The IDC study found that there was a great variety of approaches taken by vendors in the design of STAP products.  The study notes that these products can be applied in a layered fashion and, because of that, can be used in a complementary way.  For example, protections may be applied at endpoints and again at the network level.  Some of the detection techniques used by these products include sandboxing, emulation, big data analytics and containerization.  Ultimately many STAP functions are expected to be incorporated into traditional security products.

John Grady, research manager with IDC’s Security Products group, said that “organizations have quickly begun to realize that they need improved protection against targeted attacks.  IDC has seen these solutions become a strategic necessity for many organizations, especially in the financial services and government sectors, with budget being quickly allocated to prioritize deployment.”

A Ponemon study found that only about 31 percent of businesses currently are insured against data breaches, but that number continues to grow.  Companies now rank the possibility of the risk of cyber attack as a risk more likely to occur than natural disasters or other business risks.
