Security: Hackers Target Critical Infrastructure

By Dick Weisinger

Hackers are increasingly moving their sights from attacking standard IT infrastructure and instead targeting systems that control critical infrastructure, like utilities, water, transportation, manufacturing, and healthcare systems.

Dave Weinstein, Claroty’s chief security officer, said that “Most IT infrastructure was designed with security in mind. Likewise, IT infrastructure is built for interconnectivity. The OT (Operational Technology) environment, by contrast, wasn’t originally designed to be secure, and it certainly wasn’t designed to be interconnected.”

A study by Ponemon found that 56 percent of utility companies surveyed reported at least one shutdown or operational data loss over the last year due to cyber attacks. 25 percent of utility companies said that they were subjected to ‘mega attacks’ originating from nation-state actors.

Israel Barak, chief information security officer at Cybereason, said that “one of the trends that we are seeing is that there are fewer new strains of ransomware in 2020, yet the existing strains rake more gains. Hackers do this by better targeting and making more money from each target. We can expect to see an increase in multistage ransomware embedded into hacking operations in the foreseeable future.”
