Security: Nearly Half of SharePoint Installations Experience Data Breaches

By Dick Weisinger

Organizations using SharePoint and File Sharing Tools often face problems trying to control sensitive data, according to a recent survey/report by Metalogix and the Ponemon Institute.

The report found that:

  • 49 percent of respondents reported a data breach in their SharePoint systems over the last two years.
  • 79 percent say that existing security tools haven’t done a good job in protecting their sensitive data
  • 68 percent said that they don’t have good visibility into where sensitive data is being stored

Dr. Larry Ponemon, Chairman and Founder of the Ponemon Institute, said that “SharePoint houses a vast amount of sensitive data, but organizations are not taking sufficient steps to keep it safe. The pressure to be productive is causing employees to put sensitive data at risk. Security and SharePoint professionals must understand where this content resides and how it is accessed and shared.”
