Security: Intellectual Property now Top Target of Cyber Thieves
Data theft by cyber hacking has become a top worry of businesses and organizations. Thieves are getting stealthier and use a variety of techniques to hack into data stores. Types of data loss include database leaks, cloud applications and removable USB drives. Thieves are still interested in getting access to personally identifiable information (PII), but intellectual property (IP) has actually now become the more common target of recent attacks.
A report from McAfee found that data incident theft by malware increased from 23 percent in 2015 to 29 percent in 2018. Many IT professionals feel that C-level execs need to share some of the blame that has been focused solely on IT.
Candace Worley, vice president and chief technical strategist at McAfee, said that “organizations need to augment security measures by implementing a culture of security and emphasizing that all employees are part of an organisation’s security posture, not just the IT team. To stay ahead of threats, it is critical companies provide a holistic approach to improving security process by not only utilizing an integrated security solution but also practicing good security hygiene.”
