Security: More Businesses are Aware of Security Dangers, but Many Remain Unprepared

By Dick Weisinger

Headline stories about “cyber warfare” and data breaches have caused more than two-thirds of businesses to elevate their focus on information security, but many of those same companies still remain unprepared should their business become a victim to a breach or security incident.  Those are the findings of a report by Protiviti, an IT consulting company.  (An Infographic summarizing the results of the report is also available.)

The main findings of the Protiviti report are as follows:

  • Most companies view information as a strategic asset
  • One quarter of companies do not have formalized data policies, like a written information security policy (WISP) or a data encryption policy
  • Many companies treat all information in the same way, without trying to classify or assign data retention schedules
  • Many companies are not prepared to respond to a data security incident, like a data breach

Cal Slemp, managing director with Protiviti, said that “cyber security must continue to be a major focus for businesses, especially in light of recent high-profile security breaches.  While we’re seeing a greater number of companies across a wider range of industries devote more attention and resources to improving their approach to data security, there are still a lot of businesses that are susceptible to attacks.”
