Security: The War Against Cybertheft Intensifies
Has your organization been a victim of cyber-theft? If so, you’re not alone. Nearly three-quarters of organizations have been victims of cyberattacks and 21 percent of organizations think that the frequency of cyberattacks is only increasing. Those are the results found in Symmantec’s 2011: State of Security Survey.
Ninety-two percent of organization which have been victim to a cyberattack say that the incident resulted in losses, such as downtime, damage to reputation or brand, loss of employee or customer Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and loss of intellectual property. Twenty percent of organizations experienced cyberattack losses that exceeded $271,000.
The Symmantec report centered on four main findings:
Data Security is a top concern for nearly all organizations. 41 percent of organizations think that cybersecurity is more important today than it was a year ago. Organizations worry not only about external threats, but they also worry about threats originating from internal staff members, whether malicious or unintentional.
The cybersecurity landscape is changing. While technologies like mobile, tablets and social media are attractive to organizations for the many possible benefits which they offer, these same technologies can expose new security threats.
Losses due to cybertheft can be high. 84 percent of cyberattacks resulted losses to the organization, in the form of productivity, revenue, money or goods.
Organizations need to better prepare for cyberattacks. 52 percent say they could improve their strategic security initiatives. 41 percent of organizations are spending more to improve their network and web-based security. Only 45 percent of organizations are pursuing innovative security measures.
