Security: Third-Party Suppliers Major Source of Business Data Breaches
Third party vendors and suppliers are the source of more than 60 percent of data breaches according to a survey by Ponemon Institute and Opus.
The survey by Ponemon found that the number of third-party incidents is going up, partly because in a ‘gig economy’ where employers have fewer full-time employees. The number of third-party vendors that have access to business infrastructure is growing. The number of third-party suppliers increased by 25 percent in 2018 over 2017.
Dov Goldman, Vice President of Innovation at Opus, said that “the third-party ecosystem is an ideal environment for cyber criminals looking to infiltrate an organization, and the risk only grows as these networks become larger and more complex. To stay ahead of the risk, companies and executives need to collaborate around plans for third-party detection and mitigation that supports automated technology and strong governance practices.”
Lee Kirschbaum, senior vice president at Opus, said that “the reason that’s so scary, or scary to me, is the fact that if you can’t determine if you’ve had a breach … that’s really bad. Companies need to know who has access to personal and sensitive information.”
