Security: Unstructured Data Huge Cyberthreat?
Federal government IT executives are saying that unstructured data has become their biggest cyberthreat, even more so than SaaS/Cloud computing, Web 2.0, or mobile devices. That is the finding of a survey taken by Ponemon Institute. 79 percent of the IT managers surveyed said that email and text documents have become their biggest security headache.
The problem is that confidential or classified information can be buried within unstructured data and be very difficult to spot or flag as a problem. And the amount of unstructured data is only increasing. Collaboration tools are behind much of the growth of this kind of data.
Clearly, proper management of unstructured data is a huge problem, and one that both government and private sector organizations need to take seriously.
While unstructured data topped the list of concerns, other concerns include cyberterrorism — threats of potential attack to the country or region (71 percent), mobile devices (63 percent), Web 2.0 applications (52 percent), and cloud computing (32 percent). Right now few government agencies are using any type of SaaS or cloud computing, but as usage increases, concerns around security are also sure to rise.
