Social Media: IT executives see Risk
What are the riskiest areas in Enterprise IT? That’s the question that IBM put to IT executives, as reported by ZDNet’s Joe McKendrick. The response to that survey question was:
- 64 percent cited Social Media as having an “extreme risk”,
- 54 percent named Mobile computing, and
- 43 percent named Cloud computing
IT professionals worry that these technologies can expose data to risk. Using these three technologies, there is a more likely chance of unauthorized access to data and possible loss of control of data. Confidential or proprietary information is at risk of being exposed.
The IT executives cited data protection and privacy as their highest concerns relative to cloud computing. And surprisingly, as many as 44 percent of the executives are suspicious even of private cloud infrastructure. The belief is that the architecture is less secure than a traditional infrastructure. 77 percent also expressed data privacy concerns with private clouds. Despite those concerns though, only 26 percent thought that virtualization technology, the technology enabler for a cloud infrastructure, presented itself as a source of concern. Similarly, only 23 percent had concerns about the riskiness of Services Oriented Architecture (SOA).
61 percent felt that turning data over to be hosted or managed by a third party presented risks, while only 23 percent worried about possible data loss due to data breaches.
