Software Defined Storage: Efficiency from Virtualization
Storage vendors are beginning to roll out smart storage systems based on the idea of ‘software defined storage’. IBM has introduced technology that they’re calling “Elastic Storage“, and EMC has recently announced their ViPR 2.0 product. New products like these virtualize storage and efficiently manage and ideally size the amounts of storage which are needed by applications.
David Goulden, CEO of EMC Information Infrastructure, said that “the industry is navigating the single-most transformative IT shift ever. It’s driven by billions of devices, billions of users and millions of applications. Not a single industry or organization is immune to this sweeping change… The Hybrid cloud model allows customers to run applications easily and cost-effectively inside or outside of their data centers, and today’s Software-Defined products make this possible.”
In the case of IBM’s Elastic Storage, automatic life-cycle management capabilities automatically monitor data usage patterns and move infrequently used data to cheaper and slower storage media while keeping more frequently used data on more performant, but generally more expensive, storage media. Virtual storage allows the management of storage to be handled more smoothly. The plan for how data is allocated across storage media is based on defined policies and real-time analytics. IBM claims that this smarter approach for managing storage can result in as much as a 90 percent cost savings. The technology was originally prototyped in the development of IBM’s Watson project.
Tom Rosamilia, the senior vice president of IBM’s systems and technology group, said that “digital information is growing at such a rapid rate and in such dramatic volumes that traditional storage systems used to house and manage it will eventually run out of runway. Sofware-defined’ means a lot more flexibility. It means your system can expand very, very quickly… There are incredible amounts of data that need to be accessed quickly.”
