Software Development 2020:

By Dick Weisinger

Software is driving the evolution of technology, but it can be hard to keep up with the changes. Forester Research outlined five trends in Software Development that we can expect to see in 2020.

Service Mesh – software glue to allow two applications or services to communicate and share data. Forrester says that using a mesh can enable higher-value capabilities, like governance, compliance and authorization.

Embedded Developers – developers will increasingly not work in IT but directly in a business organization. Forrester says that software development is “too important to be left just up to the IT organization.”

Cloud Consolidation – The five top cloud providers: Amazon. Google. IBM, Microsoft and VmWare will have a lock on cloud business. Expect other vendors, like Oracle, SAP, Salesforce and Alibaba to fade. Smaller vendors will be “left in the dust.”

AI Testing – As long as AI is a black box, it needs to be thoroughly tested. Expect a ramp up on the number of testing tools used. AI will increasingly need to be designed so that it can “explain itself”.

Microsoft Low Code – Low code platforms, especially driven by Microsoft will power the rise of citizen programmers.
