Software Development: Developers Shift Their Focus to Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

Software developers are shifting focus towards cloud development.  The cloud offers clear advantages when it comes to maintenance and updates.  The cloud also provides greater flexibility and agility.

A Forrester report found that enterprises view cloud infrastructure as a better way to manage resources, to control privacy and security, to reduce overall project and operational costs, and to achieve better application reliability and performance.

Many developers and software vendors are giving up on new on-premise software development and instead designing for the cloud.  One big reason for the shift is that they can see the momentum that the cloud movement is taking on.  An IDG report, for example, found that on average, 25 percent of IT budgets are now being spent on the cloud, and that percentage is rapidly growing.  Developers don’t want to be left behind.

Warren Perlman, CIO of human capital management solutions company Ceridian, said that with cloud development “you’re going to minimize your costs from CapEx and OpEx, and you’ll be able to create and deliver a Web application that can perform at the same level or higher than any desktop or stand-alone app. You can also add services like patches and updates and better security — there’s absolutely no reason these days to do otherwise.”
