State of the Internet: Potentially Uplifting, but Crippled with Problems

By Dick Weisinger

An updated report by Mozilla on the state of the Internet finds troubling problems that cause it to categorize the Internet as ‘unhealthy’.

The report identifies five areas of concern:

  • Decentralization
  • Digital Inclusion
  • Openness
  • Privacy & Security
  • Web Literacy

Another area the report discusses is the potential misuse of AI. Not enough people are aware of the full capabilities of AI. “Each and everyone of us who cares about the health of the internet — we need to scale up our understanding of AI. It is being woven into nearly every kind of digital product and is being applied to more and more decisions that affect people around the world.”

The Mozilla report concludes that “the internet has the potential both to uplift and connect us. But it also has the potential to harm and tear us apart. This has become clearer to more and more people in the last few years. It has also become clear that we need to step up and do something if we want the digital world to net out as a positive for humanity rather than a negative.”
