Storage: Enterprise Hard Disk Drives Lose Out to Consumer Ones
Think that all hard drives are just a commodity and brand doesn’t really matter? Or that if you’re willing to spend more for quality that it’s better to buy ‘enterprise ready’ drives as opposed to ‘consumer’ ones?
That may not be the case. Tests on 38,000 drives by Backblaze containing more than 100 petabytes of data found huge differences in reliability of hard disk drives, with consumer drives actually out-performing more expensive enterprise drives.
Brian Beach, from Backblaze, reported that “the assumption that ‘enterprise’ drives would work better than ‘consumer’ drives has not been true in our tests. I analyzed both of these types of drives in our system and found that their failure rates in our environment were very similar — with the ‘consumer’ drives actually being slightly more reliable.” Backblaze actually prefers the consumer disks compared to the enterprise ones because of the large difference in price point and good reliability of the consumer hardware.
The Backblaze report found that drives from Hitachi had the lowest failure rate, while those from Seagate had the highest. Western Digital and Seagate are currently the leaders in the hard disk drive market.
