Storage: Research Breakthrough For Denser Storage
Researchers have created a new material that could allow today’s storage devices to shrink by 90 percent. Using the new material, a lima-bean sized computer chip could hold 600 Gigabytes of data.
The research team that fabricated the new material are from North Carolina State University and led by Dr. Jagdish Narayan, John C.C. Fan Family Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and director of the National Science Foundation Center for Advanced Materials and Smart Structures.
The breakthrough was accomplished by a new type of ceramic material that involved a selective doping process where an impurity is added to the material to change its properties. The new material was created by working at the nanometer level and by using a new technique called ‘spintronics’ that tries to take control of the energy of an electron.
It’s an exciting breakthrough, but the researchers say that the applications for these types of ceramics is not limited to data storage. The ceramics that they are working with are from a new category of material that has other interesting properties that could lead to important applications. The new ceramics, for example, could be used in building engines that are capable of withstanding twice the maximum temperature of a normal engine, leading to fuel economies of as high as 80 miles per hour. The improved thermal conductivity of the new ceramics could also be useful in the field of solar energy.
