Storage: Storage Trends for 2017
Digital storage is at the heart of IT and new technology. Here are four predictions for storage in 2017, based on a Forbes article by Gina Longoria, senior enterprise analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.
More Data. Specialized storage devices. As technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Analytics, autonomous driving, 4K+ high resolution video and others advance, so will the amount of data that will be captured by these technologies. Storage is becoming ever more important, but today’s storage devices are having a hard time keeping up with the specialized demands of these new technologies. Expect storage technology to evolve in new ways, creating storage and data management products that can meet the requirements and workloads of these new technologies.
Increased use of Public Cloud for Storage. The move of data to the cloud has been steady and relentless, and we can expect that to continue. The public cloud is especially appealing for risk management tasks like backups, business continuity, and recovery. But there still are some barriers for migration to the cloud that include security concerns, slow data transfer rates, and expensive bandwidth costs. Products like Amazon AWS’s Snowball Edge that target the data transfer problem will gradually help by enabling data to be transferred very quickly to the cloud.
Software-Defined Storage (SDS). Smart software will minimize the need for specialized storage hardware. With SDS, commodity hardware can be combined to create more flexible and lower cost storage solutions. Expect to see the introduction of more SDS products.
Use of Flash to increase. As the costs of Flash storage decline, it is becoming more popular. Flash will be especially useful for applications like high performance computing and data analytics. Faster and cheaper Flash storage will also spur adoption of faster fiber channel and ethernet storage networking protocols.
