Storage: Technology is Evolving for Greater Efficiencies
Top on the minds of IT managers around the area of storage are questions about how they can:
- Expand storage capacity to meet ever growing storage needs
- Improve on Disaster Recovery Plans
- Improve Storage performance
That’s according to an 2009 IDC Storage survey of companies in the EU.
The traditional approach to storage has been simply to just add more, but that approach is proving costly. That kind of investment doesn’t stop with just the purchase of more storage devices and media. More storage means more maintenance costs due to the complexity of management and additional operating costs.
Storage vendors are recognizing that IT departments are looking for ways to expand their storage capacity while also reducing operational costs and improving the efficiency of storage management.
Some of the technologies being introduced to address the storage problem include data deduplication, thin provisioning, storage virtualization, and improved storage management software.
In terms of infrastructure streamlining, many companies are considering cloud storage or “storage-as-a-service” as a way to reduce internal support costs around storage maintenance, backups and archivals.
One technology that looks promising is Solid State Drives (SSD). SSDs are arrays of flash memory modules that retain memory data even when they are powered down. SSDs don’t have moving parts like traditional storage units. They have faster access rates compared to today’s storage units, they don’t throw off heat, so no fans or cooling equipment is needed, and they consume much less power. But the problem with SSDs is price. They are now about 10 times the price of traditional storage.
