Storage: Weak Sales of External Storage in 2013
Gartner reports that global external storage sales increased just five percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 compared to the fourth quarter in 2012. 2013 fourth quarter external storage revenues totaled $6.3 billion,and total sales for all of 2013 came in at $22,5 billion, just a 1.4 percent increase over 2012.
Roger Cox, research vice president at Gartner, said that “following an abysmal third quarter, the fourth quarter of 2013 returned to growth. Driven by pent-up demand and the year-end budget flush phenomenon, the market overcame a fragile global economy and grew a strong five percent over the same period in 2012.”
Gartner accounted for the weak growth saying that it reflected the influence of ‘muddled global macroeconomies’.
It may seem odd with all the talk of huge growth in the data being collected that storage sales would be so weak. But these numbers refer to controller-based storage system. Gartner does not include the disk capacity of cloud-based storage providers like Amazon and Microsoft in these numbers.
