Supercomputers: Cray Dominates Government Lab Contracts

By Dick Weisinger

Cray Inc., long-time US-based supercomputer vendor, is on a roll this year with securing government contracts for building next-generation supercomputers.

In August, Cray won a 600 million contract with the US Department of Energy to build a 1.5+ exaflop system that will be delivered in 2023 called El Capitan.

In May, the DOE awarded Cray and partner AMD to build a 1.5+ exaflop computer using AMD Epyc CPUs and Radeon GPUs to be used at Oak Ridge National Laboratory called Aurora.

A second contract in May was awarded to Cray and Intel to build a supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratories that will be the first exascale system in the US. It will be based on Intel Xeon processors and be delivered by the end of 2021. This new supercomputer will be six billion times faster than the original supercomputer, the Cray-1.

U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry said that “El Capitan’s advanced capabilities for modeling, simulation and artificial intelligence will help push America’s competitive edge in energy and national security, allow us to ask tougher questions, solve greater challenges and develop better solutions for generations to come.”

This is all likely welcome news for HPE which bought Cray in May 2019.
