Systems of Systems: Symbiotic Swarms of AI
Swarms of drones. Banks of sensors operating on the edge. Autonomous vehicles and robots. These are all examples of independent systems working together cooperatively that need to perform some action or at least be able to work in ways that are productive and that don’t interfere with the others. This type of interaction between systems is called ‘system of systems’.
‘Systems of systems’ (SoS) are complex systems that can be broken down into smaller cooperating subsystems, and each of the subsystems can function independently of the others while still remaining complementary to each other and enabling all subsystems to successfully work together.
Data exchange and communication is an important element that will allow systems to interact with each other.
The Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems conference described the importance of SoS, saying that “the increasing connectivity, ‘cyber-space’ computing and artificial intelligence are providing new innovation and business opportunities in SoS by enabling data sharing, and in providing new means for coordination and prediction. The impact of the ongoing digitalization can for example be understood in terms of technologies that enable new functionality which in turn has specific qualities. The functionality and qualities enable new business and value propositions (applications). In essence this means that many new SoS will indeed be Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems.”
Hillary Ashton, Chief Product Officer at Teradata, wrote for VentureBeat that “it is no exaggeration to say that state-of-the-art artificial intelligence-based systems will change society as we know it. Like bees working together to build and maintain a hive, the algorithms in an SoS will swarm… We can also imagine a world where each mobile device can harness the power of others to help make the right decision at any time. This will be a revolution that will improve the lifestyle and even the health recommendations for each citizen.”
