Technology: 2008 the year for the Mobile Internet
At the end of 1995, many publications declared that year to have been the “Year of the Internet”. The Internet has changed a lot since then, but its use continues to grow. Mobile device access to the internet have been around for a while, but 2008 could well be the year that Mobile Internet takes off.
Internet browsing is becoming frequently standard on new mobile phones. And there are now more than a billion handsets worldwide. Until now only one in five of those with Internet connection capability on their phones used it. Now with phones like the iPhone, that’s changing. Almost 86% of iPhone users use it to go on line. Part of that success is due to how iPhones are sold — with flat data rate plans — you use as much as you want with no additional charges.
Dr. Tony Wasserman, executive director of the Center for Open Source Investigation says that “mobile devices will have a big impact on the development of Web applications. Developers will have to revise existing Web-based applications to accommodate the different screen sizes, resolutions, and input methods used for these mobile devices… By the end of the decade, we’ll see a sizable transition toward the use of mobile browsers accompanies by a multitude of new Web applications that take advantage of the capabilities of mobile devices.”
