Technology: Agility via Data Integration
BPM, BI, CRM, and ERP are just some of the types of data-centric initiatives companies have established to improve their organizational agility. Very often though the software backing each of these initiatives is isolated from each other. Even greater value is possible if the data from the many data repositories can be cleansed and made available in a consolidated view. Two recent reports, one created by Ovum and the other by Datamonitor, and both sponsored by Informatica Corporation, have come to similar conclusions that emphasize the importance of data integration strategies.
Interestingly though, one of the findings from Datamonitor is that conventional techniques for data integration can’t meet the challenge of being able to provide a quality real-time view into the consolidated data from an organization. The report advocates creating a “unified data integration platform” that can “future-proof” and organization.
70 percent of IT decision makers agree that being able to get real-time quality data is essential for them to be able to make the best decisions. The number one problem noted with existing data systems is data quality and timeliness.
The Ovum report is critical of many SOA and BPM initiatives. These projects are often become too focused on technology implementation and fail in their attempts to improve process and in providing more quality data. The Ovum report also stresses the need to create a “unified data integration platform”. Ovum also cites data latency as a major problem with existing systems.
Both the Ovum and Datamonitor reports emphasize a strong policy around managing and sharing data in a uniform way across all corporate information systems.
