Technology: Developers Increasingly Opt for High-Performance In-Memory Databases

In-Memory database use has increased worldwide 40 percent over the last six months.  Now nearly a quarter of software developers say that they’re using them, and another 39 percent say that they plan to start using in-memory databases in their projects over the next 12 months, according to a survey by Evans Data.

The drop in the cost of memory technologies like non-volatile RAM are making applications that use in-memory databases practical, and for applications where performance is important, this is becoming an attractive option.  Eweek notes that “As soon as data enters an organization, its half life begins. Data is more valuable in real time and its value diminishes over time until it becomes obsolete and irrelevant. With in-memory IT, data can be processed and stored in real-time, giving insights that can be used immediately as opposed to 24 hours or more later.”

There are actually many in-memory database options available.  IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, SAP, Software AG, and VMware have in-memory database products.  Smaller companies and projects like Xeround, VoitDB, McObject, Altibase, Kognito, and open source options like Ehcache and H2 are available.

Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data, said that “In all regions we see a strong correlation between planned or current use of in-memory databases and the perceived importance of Big Data in the organization so that is obviously a strong driver.  But the other thing that’s interesting is the equally strong correlation between in-memory database use and use or plans for development in the Cloud.”
